We’ve always suspected Apple’s devices lacked superior radio technology. Their laptops have typically underformed PCs in terms of maintaining consistent Wi-Fi connections. Apple, of course, has been notoriously secretive about glitches in their products. They typically handle these problems through the proverbial update-du-jour. Now comes news that the iPad has Wi-Fi issues also – but surprise, surprise, Apple has acknowledged the issue although their “solution” (frankly) is a kludge. See the article at Fiercewireless: http://www.fiercebroadbandwireless.com/story/apple-ipad-users-complain-about-wifi-connectivity/2010-04-07.

Cablevision has been one of the more aggressive MSOs in terms of rolling out Wi-Fi. Estimated to have spent a tad less than $300 million, they’ve rolled out Wi-Fi to a large part of Long Island and the rest of their footprint. This was widely perceived as a defensive move to keep customers from moving to Verizon’s FiOS service, which has launched in Long Island and has had a torrential marketing campaign. Now it turns out Cablevision may use this network to provide a Wi-Fi voice service, possibly with T-Mobile. T-Mobile’s support of Unlicensed Mobile Access (UMA) allows users with compatible phones to make “Wi-Fi” calls. FiereWireless has the story: http://www.fiercebroadbandwireless.com/story/draft/2010-03-01

The stories keep coming out: this week’s Mobile World Conference in Barcelona will see a plethora of 3G data offloading technologies, including some additional Wi-Fi offerings, which from our perspective remain the most tried-and-true. FierceWireless’ Lynnette Luna, clearly one of the best technical journalists who follow the wireless space, has a preview of these offerings in her latest article. See the full story here: http://www.fiercebroadbandwireless.com/story/data-offloading-market-expected-heat-week/2010-02-15.

It’s clear that the proliferation of smartphones, streaming data and other high-bandwidth applications have far surpassed the ability of 3G networks to handle the load. Moreover, the mobility horse has left the proverbial barn. So, as much as the market looks to fiber, that won’t help when you’re standing with your Smartphone in Times Square streaming a restaurant review. The choice, especially in high density cities like New York and San Francisco, is managed Wi-Fi networks into apartment buildings and Hotspots to offload the 3G traffic. It’s proven technology and it’s here.

The bloggers are out in force when it comes to blaming AT&T for network issues around the iPhone. Its unbelievable success has resulted in huge increases in wireless data usage. And with the increase in demand and the inability of 3G to handle it you now see trial-balloons being floated by the carriers around customer’s having rate plans that are tiered based on the amount of data used. See the story in FierceWireless: http://www.fiercewireless.com/story/usage-based-pricing-inevitable/2010-02-03.

The reality is that customers will continue to clamor for unlimited plans and will gravitate towards carriers that provide that. In addition, the carriers (including Verizon) have all come full circle on Wi-Fi, and now see it as an ally to help offload traffic – especially in high density cities like San Francisco and New York. Wi-Fi has become the “Windows” of the wireless world: it’s being used by everybody, it’s unlikely to be replaced by any other technology in the near terms and it’s probably here to stay (at least over the next 5 to 10 years).

Apple strikes again! At a much anticipated event, Apple’s Steve Jobs announced Apple’s latest product, iPad, yesterday in San Fran. This new tablet product has been called an Ipod Touch on steroids. What struck us are two things in particular: it will blow Amazon’s Kindle out of the water as an eReader and its initial version will come only with Wi-Fi not 3G. The buzz is that Apple and AT&T both think this is a device that doesn’t need 3G to be successful because most users will want to download books and movies over faster Wi-Fi networks at home or at hot spots and 3G won’t be necessary. And we agree! Follow the news in this WSJ article: http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052748703410004575029603916974216.html?mod=WSJ_hps_MIDDLEThirdNews

Much of the so-called Multiple Dwelling Unit (MDU) Internet discussions are around fiber deployments. Broadband Properties is a trade organization whose Mission Statement reads: “BROADBAND PROPERTIES is the leading source of information on digital and broadband technologies for buildings and communities.” And within that organization Spot On Networks carries the Wireless banner. We believe that the mobility horse has left the proverbial barn. Sure, you can’t beat fiber speeds – but consumers want mobility. They want to sit with their Smartphone by the pool and surf at Wi-Fi speeds – not cellular. Check out our Broadband Properties blog for ongoing discussions about Wi-Fi in the MDU space: http://bbpmag.com/wordpress/

The Wall Street Journal recently highlighted a known issue (at least for us at Spot On) with Wi-Fi in older buildings. See the article: http://online.wsj.com/article/SB126221116097210861.html

It highlights the problem a San Francisco apartment owner was having getting Wi-Fi to work in an older building. From our perspective, it validates the fact that every building is not the same and thus there isn’t one approach that works in all cases. We’ve run into too many cases where a local vendor who’s familiar with Brand x technology uses that to provide Wi-Fi in an apartment complex when it’s the absolute wrong approach for that building. As they say, caveat emptor!
